WANTED: A
home for the world's biggest vinyl wrap featuring an exclusive print of
ex-Beatle John Lennon. The wrap, made up of three huge posters, has adorned
St George's Hall in Liverpool city centre while renovation work was carried
out on the neo-classical building. It was paid for by the Northwest Development
Agency and took 30 gallons of ink and 150 hours to print.Famously, it
depicts ex-Beatle Lennon as the Mona Lisa with a guitar. But the print
is due to come down in two weeks when the revamp is complete. Now artist
Alex Corina from Aigburth wants to know what is going to happen to his
masterpiece.Alex, 52, said: "I approached the NWDA to ask if I could
auction one of the posters for charity."I was a patient at the Cardiothoracic
Centre, as was Capital of Culture bid supremo Sir Bob Scott, and I thought
it would be a nice gesture to auction it for their Merseybeat Appeal."But
I was told they are being handed over to the city council when they are
taken down."I am worried about what will happen to them because it
doesn't appear that anyone has got plans for a permanent home for them.
"I am also worried that they will just be stored somewhere because
if they are they are likely to be damaged."People have been very
appreciative of the posters and it would be very disappointing if they
were to disappear from public view."The posters gained international
exposure, being seen by millions around the world as the visual centrepiece
of Liverpool's campaign to become European Capital of Culture. In June
the wrap was targeted by vandals who ripped a hole from the left lens
of Lennon's spectacles, causing thousands of pounds of damage.A council
spokesman said: "We are considering what to do with the wrap and
we will take into account the views of the artist."He has his own
ideas which are very interesting and we will certainly look at them." |
