call for culture Jan 14 2004 - Liverpool Echo |

GARSTON residents are being urged to sign a petition
calling for their village to be turned into a cultural zone.
Artist
Alex Corina wants to see the area regenerated to become an artistic quarter
in time for Capital of Culture 2008.
More
than 200 people attended a meeting at the weekend to discuss the plan
and look at how the area could be transformed into a cultural paradise.
Mr
Corina, 53, who created the giant Mona Lennon banner which hung from St
George's Hall, said he was very pleased with the turnout.
He
said: "We're launching a petition to keep up the momentum and put
pressure on organisations responsible for the regeneration of Garston
to do something.
"We hope it will bring some energy and enthuse people to put pressure on the powers that be. The city council should identify vacant properties owned by the council or in private hands which could offer opportunities for cultural industry." "We
need a speedy response because people are asking what is available."
